SONGS OF LOVE AND WAR
From ancient times, love and war have walked hand in hand, singing all the while. The difference between the ars amatoris and ars armatoris was the letter “r” like the “growling of an angry dog”. Poets and composers relished in these links, writing love songs with trumpet calls and battle cries, madrigals imitating the military triumphs of their (sometimes) victorious patrons, and enlisting martial and erotic songs for sacred Masses. In addition to the wealth of Medieval and Renaissance music we will explore in all our classes, we will explore crusader songs, courtly songs that treat love as a call to battle, Masses built on the iconic “armed man”, and—most of all—songs of love to prove that in the end, “Love conquers all.”
Pitch: A=440
Join us in performing on winds, strings, voices, in mixed ensembles, and in the All-Workshop Collegium. Leading the charge will be faculty Adam Gilbert, Rotem Gilbert, and Aki Nishiguchi (winds) David Morris, Shira Kammen, and Malachai Bandy (strings), and Elena Mullins Bailey (voice).

SILENT AUCTION
We have a long tradition of holding a silent auction during our workshops. One has the opportunity to find sheet music, musicology books, instruments, music-themed knick-knacks, music/instrument stands, locally made wines, jams/jellies, cookies, ciders. . .
After the silent auction closes, there is a live auction for fun items like private lessons, bespoke compositions, house concerts, and more. . . .
Maybe you have an instrument, or book, or music you’d like to donate. All proceeds go directly to the workshops. Bring your items to the workshop check-in desk. Thank you!

There are four class periods during the day: your choice of technique classes in the morning; a late morning collegium for the whole group; and two “special topic” classes in the afternoon.
There is time every evening for individual or group practice, followed by special presentations or faculty concerts.
The week culminates in student performances Friday night and Saturday morning.

Everyone! We welcome singers and instrumentalists of all kinds: all vocal types, strings, winds, brass, and keyboardists playing instruments of the period.
To the best of our ability, we will tailor your experience to your skill level and ability so that you will feel both comfortable and challenged.
