Important message for concert-goers

Change of time and place for the February 21st concert in Berkeley

Because of the uncertainty over the repair work at St. John's Presbyterian Church, the SFEMS concert on Saturday February 21 has been relocated to the Julia Morgan Center, at 2640 College Avenue, near St. John's.

We will begin the concert at 8:00, rather than the scheduled time of 7:30, to allow audience members to make the change. Parking will be available, as usual, in the lot beneath St. John's. Insofar as possible, we will attempt to adapt our St. John's seating arrangements to the Julia Morgan auditorium.

Harpsichord

—Bach the Young Virtuoso—
The Seven Toccatas for Harpsichord

Renowned in his own day for his legendary improvisatory skills as a keyboard virtuoso, Johann Sebastian Bach gave his imagination free rein in the little-known Seven Toccatas (BWV 910-916), written when he was in his early twenties. In these multi-movement works of boundless variety and invention, Bach achieved the pinnacle of the “stylus phantasticus,” itself a magical combination of Mediterranean flashiness with northern seriousness, and imbued it with his own complex synthesis of abstract perfectionism and earthy intensity.
