Classical Workshop
June 17-23, 2012 – Let's Make History!
|
New Esterházy Quartet |
Join us for the inaugural SFEMS Classical Workshop, June 17-23, 2012, at St. Albert's Priory in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland, California. Guided by esteemed faculty from the New Esterházy Quartet (listed below), you will hone your chamber music skills with this intensive one-week seminar in classical performance practice. Participants will discover new repertoire daily and perform casual concerts nightly. Individuals and groups are welcome to apply! In addition to playing the obligatory Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, we will experience the music of lesser-known but equally-talented composers. |
You will be introduced to period styles of articulating, bowing, and phrasing and will have the opportunity to try classical period bows. Pitch will be at both "Viennese" A=430hz and "modern" A=440. Open to all skill levels.
Kati Kyme, Violin and Director
Lisa Weiss, Violin
Anthony Martin, Viola and Violin
William Skeen, Violoncello and Director
We are located on a quiet campus one block from the Rockridge BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station in Oakland. St.Albert’s Priory offers comfortable classrooms, private dorm rooms, a serene courtyard, and a beautiful church with splendid acoustics for our student and faculty concerts. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, we are secluded from the outside world yet only blocks away from our favorite coffee shops, restaurants, and grocery store in Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood.

We encourage participation from string players of all levels and ages! We also encourage the enrollment of pre-formed groups.
We look forward to seeing old friends, meeting new friends, and enjoying the best possible avocation: making music! As Anthony Martin once confessed in an interview for the SF Chronicle, "Performing quartets is a glorious opportunity to spend time uniting harmony and beauty. Perhaps this could be a model for how our society could operate."
We hope to see you this summer!
