Baroque Workshop 2009

Dates: June 14–20
Place: the peaceful campus of Sonoma State University in the heart of California’s premier wine country.

Join us in a music-packed week of master classes for instrumentalists, singers and dancers; coached ensembles; Baroque orchestra and chorus; and faculty and student concerts. For further highlights, see below and check the web site again soon.

Our workshop is designed for both the dedicated amateur and the professional musician. Make music in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Our faculty is made up of well-known performers and specialists in the field of early music who are, at the same time, insightful and gifted teachers.

Music in Italian Cities in the 17th and 18th Centuries

Spend a week exploring the rich and varied repertories from Italian cities during the Baroque period — Rome, Venice, Ferrara, Bologna, the list goes on!

Our splendid faculty will guide you through the works of composers both famous and obscure such as Corelli, Cazzati, Vivaldi, Bassani, Caccini and more.

Highlights of the Daily Schedule:

  • Morning masterclasses: Instructors have their individual methods of running the classes, but you can expect warm-up routines, instruction and discussions of technique, fingering, bowing, breathing, pronunciation, knives and cane, articulation syllables, stylistic interpretation, ornamentation and so on.   • TBA: Chorus and Orchestra project directed by Michael Sand. We may have a small number of vocal solos in this performance. Singers, if you would like to audition for these solos, please click on Info for Singers. You will find more info about activities for singers.

  • Afternoon coached ensembles. These will be assembled Sunday evening by the faculty after they have heard all the participants.

  • Afternoon Classes on Figured Bass and other important aspects of Baroque music

  • Full schedule for Recorders: masterclasses, ensembles, technique, and warm-ups

  • Detailed Daily Schedule.

Evening Events

  • Faculty Concerts Faculty present works by Italian composers of the 17th and 18th centuries including Cazzati, Corelli and Vivaldi. Sunday, June 14 at 3:00 pm and Tuesday, June 16 at 8:00 pm. Concerts are open to the public and free to workshop participants.

  • Baroque Dance, Monday June 15. Lecture/demonstration and dancing for all.

  • Concerto Evening, Wednesday June 17. Participants play a movement from a Baroque concerto or sing an orchestral aria from a cantata or opera. More info for Concerto participants. Participants must get the approval of their main teachers and supply the correct orchestral parts. Contact Phebe Craig (phebec@aol.com) for more information.

  • On Friday night, June 19. Performance of Workshop Project, Party and Silent Auction. The silent auction will support scholarships for the Baroque Workshop. Please bring items to donate to the cause!

Workshop Fees

The fee for the Baroque workshop is $470 for enrollment by May 1, and $520 for enrollment received after May 1. Discounts are available for SFEMS members and for enrollment in more than one workshop. Room and board at Sonoma State is $480, single occupancy only. All details are on the online enrollment form.

The Small Print

SFEMS reserves the right to modify programs and faculty, without notice, as needed to match enrollment and student preferences. Participants enrolling before May 1 pay a lower tuition rate. A non-refundable minimum deposit of $100 per week is required. IF YOU CANCEL WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF A WORKSHOP, PAYMENT OF FULL TUITION IS REQUIRED. A full room & board payment is required to reserve your room. This payment is fully refundable until 5 weeks before your workshop. All fees must be paid in full by the first day of the event. Room and board at Sonoma State University and St. Albert’s Priory are optional, and single meals, including a vegetarian menu, are available. Smoking is not permitted in campus buildings.
