Masterclass Descriptions

Marion Verbruggen - Recorder Master Class

This class is organized as a series of lessons given in front of auditors. Marion speaks to style, interpretation, breath technique, fingering and tuning issues. An accompanist will be present. Participants audition to perform in this class on Sunday evening, June 17, after dinner. Auditors are welcome to sit in on the class.

Please see Info for Recorders, for a complete description of the daily schedule for recorder players.

Washington McClain - Oboe Master Class

The baroque oboe class will focus on reed-making on a daily basis, as well as improving tone production and working on répertoire brought by the participants; as well as duos and trio-sonatas and even music for oboe band. Participants should plan on bringing German, French, Italian and English répertoire.

Kathleen Kraft - Flute Master Class

The class will cover all aspects of technique (breathing, position, fingerings, and embrochure) as well as musical style and expression (phrasing, ornaments, rhetoric, and articulation). Each student will have opportunities to perform in the class. You may bring any piece you wish to work on. If you wish to focus on German music (this year's workshop theme), there are sonatas and suites by Bach, CPE Bach, Quantz and many others. The class has a supportive and friendly atmosphere with lots of lively group discussion. Traversi will be available for silver flute players who wish to try them. Feel free to contact me with any questions at (707) 874-2014 or kkraft@sonic.net

Michael Sand - Violin Master Class

The violin/viola master class is organized as a series of individual lessons, but I encourage students to audit each other's lessons since the same problems tend to come up over and over. And to make it easier to understand these problems, I see to it that everyone gets a copy of the pieces being worked on. I have found that working in this way, all the important issues, both technical and musical, basic and advanced, tend to get covered in the course of the week. Modern players who want to get an intense immersion in Baroque style are welcome. Our workshop theme this year is the music that was played and composed in Central Europe where both Italian and French styles flourished, along with the work of the German composers. It would be appropriate for students to prepare either pieces in both the earlier 17th-century style and/or pieces in the later 18th-century style. Call Michael Sand if you wish to consult about repertoire (707) 942-0717, or email him at sandviolin@aol.com.

Karen Clark & Chris Fritzsche - Voice Master Class

The voice master class will focus on style, technique, and diction in the baroque literature. Bring Baroque songs or arias you have prepared in advance (and translated, if not in English), with extra copies to share with the class. Italian, English, and German arias and recitatives will be particularly useful for workshop study this year, but any Baroque repertoire you wish to bring to class is welcome.

To consult about repertoire, contact Karen Clark: karenreeclark@earthlink.net

Coaching/Auditions for Handel's The Triumph of Time and Truth will take place on Sunday, May 11, beginning at 2 PM. There is a $25 coaching fee. Please contact Phebe Craig to schedule.

Placement auditions for the ensembles take place on the first evening of the workshop.

David Morris - Cello Master Class

This class is open to both seasoned baroque cellists (with gut-string-and-baroque-bow experience) and interested modern players willing to play at 415hz. We will spend our class time exploring the technical issues and nuances involved in effective continuo playing as well as the solo cello literature. Since our theme for the week is "The World of Charles Burney and the Musical Life of the 18th Century", I would like to have our cello master class be an exploration of contrasting musical styles. To that end, I would like students to pick a movement of a solo sonata (or even just an interesting bassline) and then get in touch with me before the week begins mahlsdorf@earthlink.net or (510) 658-3382) so that, between us, we end up covering a variety of national musical styles. If you don't know what to music to choose, I would be happy to help.

Mary Springfels - Viola da Gamba Master Class

The morning viols class will be devoted to English Music for Viols from Simpson to Abel. Intermediate to advanced players of treble and bass are welcome. We will use Simpson's Division Viol as a technical basis for the week's work, but we will also explore later composers, including Matthew Locke, Benjamin Hely, GF Handel and CF Abel. The morning will be divided between technique for all, master classes, and ensemble playing. Ms Springfels will be glad to answer any questions about repertoire via her gmail address. mvspring@gmail.com
