2006 Baroque Music and Dance Workshop

Study and dance with Tangkao Tan

This workshop in 18th century dance has taken place annually for more than a quarter of a century. From its earliest days, a unique feature of this workshop has been the close interaction between musicians and dancers. Tempo markings from the period inform the performance of the music and of the dance, adhering to the tempi suggested in 1705 by L’Affillard in his Principes Très Faciles pour bien Apprendre la Musique. Special attention is paid to stylistic qualities of different dance types (bourrée, gavotte, minuet, sarabande, gigue etc.).

In 2006, dances from French theatre will be the focus of study. Singers, players and dancers will be grouped in scenes selected and coached by the faculty. Dancers will also work to increase their coordination and technical skills in daily classes. Intermediate and advanced workshop participants may also choose dances for individual coaching in consultation. This will allow a wide variety of dances to be highlighted and studied. Choreographies can range from simple to moderately difficult to extremely challenging.

* Tangkao Tan has performed in California, France and the Czech Republic. He has formed a Baroque Dance ensemble, “Delices de la Muse” in California, and most recently has been in Shanghai, where he has performed for the French Consulate and Alliance Francaise. His training began in Taiwan and continued in Prague, and he has studied at workshops at the Longy School in Boston and the SFEMS Baroque Workshop in California, where he has worked with Angene Feves. He teaches classical ballet and French country and court dances of the 18th century.
